In today’s episode herbalist Heather Irvine gives us an excellent intro to hibiscus. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned herbalist, you’re sure to have some takeaways, enjoy!

There are many sacred, sexy, and fun uses for hibiscus, not even necessarily to be used at the same time.
— Heather Irvine

About Heather
A former foraging frolicker, who aims at answering some of often asked but tougher questions in herbalism, such as, how herbs work and what are the real versus theoretical safety issues.  Heather was not long ago collecting and growing hundreds of medicinal plant species for her small herbal product line: Giving Tree Botanicals.  www.GivingTreeBotanicals.com.  Now in the heart of Boston, she is offering herbal health consultations, classes and informal one on one herbal mentorship for interested persons who have immersed themselves in one or more aspects of herbalism or related topics and want to continue with guidance, regular one on one instruction and encouragement, with the possibility of attending occasional community-building events with other students. Fits your schedule and starts where you are!

She also teaches Actions and Chemistry for the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism, www.VTHerbCenter.org and teaches two for-credit herbal courses, for Johnson State College/Northern Vermont University. She gets a great thrill out of presenting at and simply attending herbal events, from Herbstalk, a bustling educational and community gathering in the Boston area to the annual American Herbalists Guild Symposium and anything in between. She has also begun offering seminars for health professionals, the first of which is called "Supplement Straight Talk" about practical aspects of popular herbs & supplements, and talking to patients about herbs.

Motherwort Monograph with Dana Aronson |136

Listen in as herbalist Dana Aronson talks all about the beautiful motherwort!

Motherwort’s latin name, Leonurus cardiaca, is depicted from the Greek word leon (lion), ouros (tail), and cardiaca, giving meaning to the heart. This sheds light to the common name, Lion’s Heart. In Europe, the name “motherwort,” has a literal meaning of “mother-herb.” With both of these names, this gives a small peek into the medical properties of this plant we know as Motherwort.

Check out Dana’s motherwort monograph HERE.

Autoimmune Nephritis and Hypothyroid Case Study with Katja Swift and Ryn Midura | 134

This week on the HerbRally podcast, Katja and Ryn talk about one of their Clinical Herbalist students and a case with autoimmune nephritis and hypothyroid. This case is particularly interesting because the herbal interventions were alongside conventional medical treatments, and there was plenty of lab testing to confirm the results they were getting. It's so exciting when you hear a doctor say "These test results are amazing. Tell me again what your herbal protocol was?".

This is just one example of how we work as professional herbalists. There are a lot of ways to make herbalism a career, and we can help you make it happen! The Clinical Herbalist online video course will give you the skills you need to take your practice of herbalism to the professional level. And when you've finished with that, they’ve even got mentorships that will help you with all the business aspects of getting started, as well as clinical mentorship to go through every single case with you as you're starting out on your own - it's so much easier when you've got support to rely on! They will even help you through the AHG professional membership process - they’re with you every step of the way.

All of their programs are taught with self-paced videos, and you can log in twice weekly to our live Q&A sessions to ask your questions live and in person if you like! There are integrated discussion threads right in every video so you can ask your questions right when you think of them, too! There are quizzes, printable quick guides, lots of scientific research and case studies, and more. Plus, you get lifetime access - you can watch the videos a million times if you want to!

Katja and Ryn have been teaching this clinical program here in Boston for the past 10 years, and it launches online on November 4th.

You really can build an herbal career for yourself. It's not just a dream: you can make it real in your life, and Katja and Ryn can help!

Arthritis and Insomnia Case Study with Katja and Ryn from Commonwealth Center for Holistic Herbalism | 133

In this week’s episode with Commonwealth Center for Holistic Herbalism, Katja and Ryn talk about one of their Community Herbalist students who helped her elderly neighbor with her arthritis pain and also in dealing with insomnia. We shared her thought process as she selected the herbs she wanted to formulate, as well as the work she did to narrow down the problem of insomnia so that she could choose herbs that would really help.

This case study emphasizes the ways that we can strengthen community with our herbal skills. And whether you choose to volunteer your skills for your neighbors or are looking to start a career in supporting your community professionally, the bottom line is that we need one another. When we care for one another, when we build relationships, everyone is stronger.

Katja and Ryn are so excited about the community of learners that is growing around these video courses. Not only are all the courses taught in a self-paced video format, but they also have twice-weekly live sessions that you can log in to, so even though you are going at your own pace, you're never alone! You can chat with the whole community - and the teachers! - directly in the discussion thread that's a part of each video, too. This way, you're being supported by a vibrant community of people learning right along with you while you are supporting others in your local community with the skills you are learning!

Peggy says:

"I really, truly, madly love you guys and the community you have built with the plants and with us students. Not only that, but this all comes at the perfect time: it's been pulling me up through some darkness and has been a lifesaver. I love having something positive to focus on and I feel like the more I get herbs into my life, the more the awfulness I've been dealing with in my life is falling away."

CLASSES | Erika Galentin at the Breitenbush Herbal Conference

In today’s episode we’ll hear from herbalist Erika Galentin as she gives us a rundown on the classes she’ll be teaching at the upcoming Breitenbush Herbal Conference.

More from Erika:

Aromatic Distillation: A Ritual Journey of Self-Reflection (Intensive)

Aromatic distillation is alchemical in nature; it is a process that relies on the four elements of earth, air, fire, & water in the transmutation and capture of aromatic molecules from plants into hydrosols and essential oils.  The Alchemists of old believed their work to be spiritual in nature. Modern alchemical scholars have interpreted this work metaphorically; Alchemy can be considered a collection of psychic processes shared within the totality of human experiences, or what Carl Jung termed the 'collective unconscious'. In this interpretation, the 'lead into gold' of the Alchemists becomes an inspirational allegory of the work required for the refinement of Self and emanation of the Soul.

The process of Aromatic Distillation is most certainly a spiritual one, involving both ceremony and celebration. It is an attempt to foster a deeper relationship with the plant kingdom, a relationship full of metaphor, story, and personal myth, while simultaneously developing deeper relationships with ourselves and our unconscious. In this regard, each distillation provides a platform for self-discovery and exploration of the natural world.

In this intensive workshop you will learn about the anatomy and physiology of aromatic distillation and participate in the process as a ritual journey of self-reflection. Participants are encouraged to bring with them stones, crystals, or personal symbols / items to contribute to the process and support each participant’s unique inner journey. Participants are also encouraged to bring a journal for self-reflection while the distillation is taking place. (Depending on #: Participants will be able to take a sample of the hydrosol home).

Shame, Inflammation, and our Herbal Allies: Unlocking the Inner Pillory

Join Clinical Herbalist, Erika Galentin,  of Sovereignty Herbs on an exploration of the physiology of shame, what is known about its proinflammatory influence over physical wellbeing, and herbs and aromatics that may support navigating shame and its often treacherous terrain.

Topics to be covered include:

- Framing the emotions and experiences of shame within the context of one's perceptions of physical health & wellbeing.

- Exploring what is known about the physiology of shame and its proinflammatory influence over the   human body.

- A discussion on the relationship between inflammation & common health problems.

- Herbs and aromatics that may support the physical body, psyche, and spiritual needs of those who are navigating shame and its often treacherous terrain.

Demystifying Herb-Drug Interactions

Many people get very frightened when they think about herbs and drugs interacting with each other. Some even may feel defensive about the idea that pharmaceutical medicine so easily puts herbs in the hot seat. In this class you will be introduced to the means by which herbs and drugs may interact with each other, for better or for worse. We will also be learning skills for easier interpretation of the scientific research investigating these interactions in order to discern their clinical relevance.

What you will learn:

- Introduction to pharmacological terms

- Pharmacokinetic & pharmacodynamic mechanisms

- Which herbs & drugs present the highest risk

- Other client-centered risk factors

- How to avoid herb-drug interactions

- Skills to evaluate herb-drug interaction research

- How to discern clinical relevance

ONLINE EDUCATION | Planta Dyadica

In today’s episode, we’ll hear Erika Galentin talk about Sovereignty Herbs’ exciting new offering!

Introducing an empowering journey of herbal discovery…

…focusing on a single herb at a time. Each month you will be mailed a Discovery Box full of a variety of herbal and aromatic extracts to explore as well as seeds or the living plant itself to grow in your gardens or window sills! Through prompts from a beautiful downloadable journal, live online class time, and a private forum, you will be guided through simple techniques to hone your senses and develop intuitive yet learned relationships with herbs. Three and six month options available for our 2019 program.

Monthly mysteries delivered to your door…

“I often tell my students that they must forget everything they think they know about the plant we are studying…at least while the study process is taking place. I even ask them not to call the plant by its human-given name, English or otherwise. For even in that second, when we give a plant a name, a label, we inevitably stop listening.” - Erika Galentin, Clinical Herbalist & Co-creator at Sovereignty Herbs

EACH 3-MONTH COURSE INCLUDES:

Three Discovery Boxes: At the beginning of the month you receive a box containing one mystery plant in several forms. The name of the plant won’t be revealed until the second or third week of class, after you have had the opportunity to work with the Discovery Box contents. Though the contents may vary, each box will contain elements of the following:

  • The Matter: the dried herb

  • The Soul: aromatic preparation, hydrosol, or essential oil

  • The Medicine: syrup, cordial, or tincture

  • The Life: seed packet or live plant

  • The Ritual: flower essence, framable photo, or incense

A Beautiful Workbook/Journal: This downloadable pdf journal guides and supports you through the discovery process using Planta Dyadica methods. It also provides a way of documenting your experiences and growing knowledge base. By the end of your program you will have created a profoundly beautiful record of your (un)learning process.

Private Facebook Group: You will be given access to the private Planta Dyadica Facebook group where you can interact with other plant lovers in the program, share your insights, and communicate directly with your instructors, Brooke and Erika. Several times a week discussion and journaling prompts will be shared to assist you in building a relationship with the plant in your Discovery Box. We will also be hosting two live events through this group.

Three Interactive Online Events:

Two Facebook Live Events: Join us for our first day of class as we unwrap our Discovery Boxes and review the materials. We will walk you through what to expect and where to start. In week two we gather together with our tea mugs and compare our findings in a live tea tasting.

One Live Webinar: During the third week of the month, join us for a live one-hour webinar where we reveal the name of the plant as well as discuss herbal actions and uses, relevant research, and other facts surrounding the plant’s biology, ecology, preferred growing conditions, and ethical harvesting techniques. Downloadable handouts included!

One Awesome Community Zine: At the end of each three month cohort, we will be publishing a zine that highlights everyone's experiences and ideas. As there are a variety of creative ways of exploring the plants, we hope that the zine will be full of drawings, paintings, essays, poetry, written word, collage, and other expressive insights about the plants we studied together. Each zine will only be published once and will be mailed to the participants as a community memoir and keepsake of their experience.
