This week-long retreat is an immersion into the medicinal plants of the Southern Appalachians, a region sometimes referred to as the “Apothecary of North America.” Together, we’ll explore the incredible diversity of native, introduced, and cultivated herbs that thrive here.
Patricia Kyritsi Howell and Cara-Lee Langston lead retreat activities, including field studies, lectures, wildcrafting, foraging, medicine making, and more. Other guest teachers to be announced.
Arrive Sunday in time for an evening orientation and wild foods reception at the Parker Ranch. Monday morning, we’ll head out to a local trail to begin botanizing. Each day starts with a field trip where you’ll learn to use a botanical key to identify spring herbs, practice sustainable harvesting, and gather herbs to make medicines.
In the afternoon, we return to Parker Ranch to talk about the medicinal uses of the herbs we’ve seen and process plants harvested. Our schedule includes free time each day allows you to explore Rabun County.
