Herbalist Interview: Hope Najjar with Selena Rowan | 116

Meet Hope Najjar - a born and raised Californian with Chicana and Lebanese roots with  incredible energy and clear vision. Hope is opening Night Hawk Art and Healing Collective in our tiny town of Laytonville, part of the Eel River watershed in rural inland Mendocino County of far northern California. The Night Hawk Collective has goals as lofty as its name sake, and hopes to serve as a community hub, empowering the community through sharing traditional methods of healing and promoting self-care.

This community is on a precipice after over 5 years of historic drought and water crises, concurrent with historic fires (including the Mendocino Complex, the largest fire in California history), ecological fracturing, threatened extinction of our local salmon and collapse of local fisheries, and severe and sudden economic decline due to the third economic boom and bust cycle in the region's history of extractive industries (in the past few decades we've experienced the collapse of the logging, fisheries, and cannabis production industries). Amidst all this, Hope is part of a generation of young folk here working hard to cultivate a community resilient enough to survive the current and future changes we face.

So listen with herbalist Selena Rowan of Nine Sisters Botanicals, and join the movement for sustainable, enthusiastic, loving, creative culture and community as we traverse through the unknown and unpredictable experience that is our current time.

Becoming a Practicing Herbalist with Micah McLaughlin | 109

Today’s episode is brought to you by the Great Lakes Herb Faire! This recording is from their 2018 event in Chelsea, MI.

Thanks to the Great Lakes Herb Faire and Micah McLaughlin for sharing this audio!

CLASS DESCRIPTION
It can feel frightening and overwhelming to move from being an at-home herbalist to starting your practice. In this class, we'll explore possibilities in forming a business that meets your own unique needs and how to avoid the pitfalls of many startup practices. Understanding your goals as a person is the first step in launching your herbal practice. This class will be useful for those asking questions like “What kind of business do I want to create?” and “Is this business I created really serving my community and the life I want?”

Micah McLaughlin is a naturopathic practitioner specializing in the integration of the body and mind. Micah uses the traditional naturopathic tools of sclerology, muscle testing, holistic counseling, and facial/fingernail/tongue analysis to find the root of his clients’ health complaints. With an approach of curiosity and investigation Micah looks for the energetic and emotional blocks underlying symptoms, often requesting that these be “noticed” or “examined” by his clients. Herbs, flower essences, supplements, breath work, and energy work are used as Micah helps people connect to who they truly are. Through this process clients are able to shed their limiting beliefs and embodied patterns and find healing on a physical, emotional, and often spiritual level. Micah was trained at the Naturopathic Institute of Therapies and Education and founded Continuum Healing in 2008 and co-founded the Wellness Collective GR in 2015. He further studied Western Herbalism and the Enneagram, deepening his passion to treat the whole person. Micah  has written and taught his Survival Herbalism course at various primitive skills schools throughout the country. Micah deeply believes in the healing ability of the body and inspires his clients through hope and empowerment.

Guido Masé: Herbal Medicine in Cancer Therapy - Managing an Integrative Protocol | 107

Today’s episode was recorded at the 2018 Great Lakes Herb Faire. Thanks to Anna Fernandez for providing the audio. Please take a moment to check out their upcoming event in Chelsea, MI from September 6 - 8, 2019: LEARN MORE

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Botanicals have an important role to play for the cancer patient. Their primary strength is helping to improve quality of life, lessen the chance of infection, and protect vital organs when taken alongside conventional treatment. But questions often arise: what are the potential interactions with modern treatment? What herbs have the best track record, and at what dose? What effects can herbs have in hormone-sensitive cancers? We will work through these questions and review current research to help highlight safe and effective use, and reinforce the idea that herbal medicine isn’t just helpful – it is an essential component of the cancer patient’s support plan.

REPLAY | Hawthorn Monograph with Heather Irvine

It’s been about a year since we released this awesome episode on hawthorn with Heather Irvine, so I thought it’d be a good time to revive it.

CLICK HERE to read Heather’s original hawthorn monograph.

Heather will be presenting at the upcoming Breitenbush Herbal Conference this September! We hope to see you there.

Hawthorn is one of those country herbs whose leading quality one might at first describe as benevolent. It is much more powerful though! A great tree, low and broad in stature, it occurs wild in edge-lands of landscapes or occasionally planted for beauty, especially with respect to its generous white blossoms or deep red fruit in the fall and winter. It serves food and sanctuary to wildlife. Overzealous thorns protect birds and smaller critters from those larger ones which receive a memorable gauge and at best a pause to lick one’s wounds! In and around a Hawthorn’s understory, clumsy human types get so focused on the prize… zeroing in on more flowers or more berries, faster, receiving a poke followed by a clumsier startled retraction. Birds and squirrels laugh at us for sure!
